Jerome, who also works as a quality control lab technician for Bell’s Brewery, studied anthropology and zoology before earning his PhD in microbiology. This education informed his passion for the craft of brewing and distilling. “I’ve always been interested in how scientific principles can be used to create things,” he says.

The distillery has a reputation for its creative themes. For Weiss in the Wild, the Downtown Clawson cocktail bar transformed itself into a jungle-themed speakeasy complete with branches, monkeys and animal noises. The menu features cocktails made with Weiss’ vodka, gin, rum and absinthe. Try the Grow a Girlfriend, a gin drink with cucumber, elderflower liqueur, honey and citric acid or the Trop Cherry, a rum mix with mango, lime, dragonfruit and chili salt rim.
